Navigating India’s Coir Export Boom: Why Margin, Modernization, and R&D Matter More Than Volume

India’s coir and coir products sector has achieved a significant milestone. Export earnings surged by 52% in value to reach ₹6,614 Crore in FY26, alongside a 12% rise in export volume totaling 15,09,531 tonnes.
While top-line growth across export markets highlights robust global interest in natural, agro-based floor coverings and substrates, the real test of endurance lies beneath headline figures.
At Travancore Cocotuft Private Limited, carrying forward over a century of Kerala’s coir legacy since 1917, we view market shifts through a lens of long-term operational resilience and sustainable manufacturing.
Unpacking the Export Surge: Where Growth Originates
The surge in FY26 export earnings is driven by a combination of evolving global product demand and macroeconomic factors:
Agro-Based Demand: As noted by Arjun Mahadevan, President of the Coir Shippers Council and CEO of Travancore Cocotuft Pvt Ltd, export turnover growth was led by the rising contribution of coco peat and other agro-based coir products, running alongside traditional coir floor coverings.
Tufted and Peat Dynamics: Coir pith exports saw a sharp rise of 13.5% in volume and 72.3% in value, while tufted mats grew by 10.4% in volume and 7.5% in value.
Currency Realizations: Favorable currency movements, particularly the appreciation of the US dollar against the Indian rupee, contributed significantly to higher export realizations in rupee terms.
Sustained Global Appetite: India accounts for roughly two-thirds of global coir production, with major consumption hubs led by China (27%), the United States (16.45%), and the Netherlands (10%).
Moving From Turnover to Margin: A Strategic Imperative
Top-line expansions driven by currency movements and raw commodity shipments cannot replace sustainable business foundations.
As our CEO, Arjun Mahadevan, highlighted in his industry address:
"The future of the coir industry depends not merely on export volumes, but on how profitably and sustainably businesses operate. We must move away from a turnover-driven approach toward a profitability-oriented, innovation-led business model."
When businesses focus purely on volume targets, vulnerabilities emerge quickly when raw material costs fluctuate or foreign currencies stabilize. Prioritizing profitability allows manufacturers to build strong financial reserves and direct capital into areas that elevate product value:
Reinvesting in Automation & Process Efficiency: Modernizing production floors bridges traditional Kerala craftsmanship with high-throughput precision, keeping costs competitive.
Product Development & R&D: Shifting output from basic raw fibre export to engineered, value-added floor coverings, recycled blends, and rubberized coir solutions.
Buffer Against Global Slowdowns: Consumer spending across key traditional markets like Europe and the United States faces potential cooling periods. Healthy margins provide the balance sheet stability needed to withstand cyclical economic downturns without compromising operations.
Modernizing Kerala’s Century-Old Coir Craftsmanship
Kerala’s coir industry cannot afford to remain tied to narrow product brackets or a small handful of export destinations. Transitioning requires continuous backing from industry bodies and government modernization schemes focused on targeted R&D.
At our manufacturing facility in the Coir Park at Cherthala, Travancore Cocotuft channels this approach directly into practice:
Diverse Flooring Solutions: Beyond traditional coir door mats and matting, our range spans natural sisal, eco-friendly jute rugs, vulcanized rubber, and durable polypropylene mats.
Sustainable Circular Innovation: Integrating circular design by incorporating post-consumer recycled PET and recycled rubber into performance entrance mats.
Global Compliance & Scale: Supporting international retailers, hospitality chains, and commercial importers with bespoke sizing, custom private-label branding, and optimized container logistics.
Building for the Long Term
Export spikes provide welcome momentum, but strategic discipline ensures longevity. By anchoring operations in healthy margins, investing in modern manufacturing technology, and diversifying into engineered, sustainable materials, Travancore Cocotuft remains dedicated to leading Kerala’s coir heritage into a resilient global future.
