Travancore Cocotuft: Pioneering the Future of Coir and Natural Fibre Flooring
Updated: Apr 6
The recent Vision 2031: International Conference on Development and Democracy held in Thiruvananthapuram marked a historic milestone for Kerala's industrial roadmap. As India marches toward becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2031—with a projected GDP of $7 trillion—Travancore Cocotuft is proud to be a key player in this national and state-level transformation.
Our Managing Director, Mahadevan Pavithran, addressed the conference with a bold vision for the future. He emphasized that for Kerala to lead, our traditional sectors must evolve through innovation and value addition.
From "Coir" to a Global "Floor Covering Industry"
A central theme of the address was the paradigm shift from a narrow "coir" focus to a comprehensive Floor Covering Industry. While coir remains our heritage, our survival and growth in a global market of 67 countries depend on our ability to innovate with diverse materials:
Diversification: We now craft high-quality products using jute, rubber, polypropylene, sisal, and rubberised coir.
Sustainability: Embracing the circular economy, we utilize recycled rubber and recycled PET mats made from plastic bottles to meet global eco-standards.
Economic Impact: Currently, the top 10 private companies contribute 80% of the region's coir export turnover. Our MD proposed an ambitious target: if 10,000 companies scale to a 10-crore turnover each, Kerala can achieve a staggering 3 lakh crore industrial impact.
The Success of "Mission 1000"
Travancore Cocotuft is a proud participant in Kerala’s Mission 1000, with four to five of our group companies selected for this elite scale-up initiative.
Handholding Support: We extend our sincere gratitude to the Industries Department and ground-level staff for their "fantastic support" in navigating the scaling process.
MSME Growth: This mission targets scaling 1,000 MSMEs into 100-crore turnover businesses, providing a 40% capital investment subsidy and dedicated one-to-one mentoring.
A Vision for Value Addition & Infrastructure
To ensure Kerala remains competitive in the global market, our MD highlighted critical areas for growth:
Advanced Manufacturing: The proposal for a pharmaceutical-grade activated carbon plant in Calicut—using a PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model—could transform how we use local coconut husks and shells.
Industrial Upgrades: Advocating for better infrastructure, including common Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) and upgraded roads in industrial estates, to streamline manufacturing.
The "Gold Card" System: A proposed rating system for industrialists (Gold, Silver, Platinum) would fast-track approvals for those consistently providing employment and building on assigned land.
Embracing Digital Transformation
As we transition from a traditional manufacturer to a digital B2B powerhouse, we recognize the importance of technology. Our goal is to transform our website from a static catalogue into a high-conversion lead machine that captures inquiries from global wholesalers and retail chains.
By focusing on digital strategies, we aim to enhance our brand authority and position Travancore Cocotuft as the "Global Authority on Coir and Natural Fibre Flooring." This transition will not only improve our search visibility but also ensure we rank on Page 1 for high-intent B2B keywords.
Looking Ahead
With over a century of experience since 1917, Travancore Cocotuft remains committed to Kerala’s rich heritage while embracing the technology-driven future of Vision 2031. By focusing on global certifications like Oeko-Tex and REACH, we ensure that our Kerala-made floor coverings continue to grace homes across the world with elegance and environmental responsibility.
Together, we are not just weaving mats; we are weaving the future of Kerala’s economy.
